Rob Edwards and O'Neil are two of the early names under consideration to replace the former manager as head coach of Wolves.
The previous coach was sacked on Sunday following the team's ten-game winless beginning to the top-flight campaign.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic associations to the team - are among the options to be evaluated by the club leadership.
Edwards is currently at another club, which would create a possible hurdle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the former Luton head coach - who made more than 100 of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is considered a leading contender for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is said to have support from the Wolves directors as they start the process of appointing a new head coach.
O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, although he would be a shock appointment given he was sacked by the club in December last year.
The former West Ham player is currently unemployed which means Wolves would not need to pay any compensation.
